Turning Big Data into Meaningful Information

The session addresses all that is happening on the Facebook page of your agency, or the tweets that are directed to an agency handle, or a hashtag that has direct relevance to your agency. It is possible to make sense of this data & the amazing insights can make your life simpler.

The use of unstructured Big Data in citizen data collection

Focuses on digitally collecting and analyzing data using open-ended questions and by extracting information from social media, to make informed planning decisions

  • 9:45 to 10:00 Introductions – who you are, where you are from, and what brings you here 
  • 10:00 to 10:30 am Discussion of the theoretical and philosophical implications of needs assessment in recreation 
  • 10:30 to 11:00 am Discussion of the fundamental assumptions and foundations on which a needs assessment should be conducted Pragmatic value of doing needs assessments 
  • 11:00 to 11:30 am The best methodology for conducting needs assessments and user surveys 
  • 11:30 to 11:45 am Break 
  • 11:45 am to 12:15 pm Continuation of methods discussion including harvesting of Big Data 
  • 12:15 to 1:15 pm Lunch 
  • 1:15 to 1:45 pm Overview of statistical procedures needed to analyze needs assessment data 
  • 1:45 to 2:30 pm Description of Big Data Overview of the analysis of Big Data from social media for decision making
